The Benagil sea caves off Portimao
Portimao · 180 trips reviewed

Portimao runs the coast.

Boats to the Benagil sea caves, kayaks under the cliffs, sunset off Praia da Rocha, and the slow run up the Arade to Silves. What each trip is really like, what it costs, and where to book.

The shortlist

Seven you book without a second thought.

First trip to the Algarve or your fifth, these carry the week. The sunset run out to the Benagil caves, a morning kayak under the cliffs, the catamaran with the beach barbecue. Priced, timed, and worth the deck space.

The big day on the water

The sea caves earn the hype.

A vaulted dome with a hole open to the sky and a strip of sand you can only reach by water. Boats leave the Portimao marina all day for the run east past Praia da Marinha. This is the trip the whole coast is built around, and the one most people book first.

Off the boat, to the table

The coast eats well too.

Portimao still lands its own sardines, and the hills behind it pour the wine. Tapas along the old quays, a cellar tasting up toward Silves, a long lunch on deck. Three good ways to spend an afternoon.

For the restless

When floating is not enough.

Jeep tracks into the Monchique hills, a tandem skydive over the whole coastline, a surf lesson off Praia da Rocha. The Algarve does adrenaline as well as it does beaches. Pick your nerve.

Inland and unhurried

Upriver, the Algarve slows down.

Trade the open sea for the Arade. The river runs up to Silves, where a red Moorish castle still stands over the old capital, and the road climbs on into the cool woods of Monchique. Boat, jeep, or a tasting in between. The quiet half of the coast.

Along the coast

Pick your stretch of the Algarve.

The coast reads west to east from the marina. Praia da Rocha for the boardwalk and the ochre stacks. Ferragudo across the river. Alvor and its estuary one way, Benagil and Marinha the other.

What does your day look like?

Twelve doors into the same coast. Pick the kind of day you want and every trip behind it is already reviewed and priced.

Beyond the harbour

A morning inland, back for the beach.

The west Algarve is small. Silves and its castle, the Monchique hills, Ferragudo across the water, the clifftop trail through the Seven Hanging Valleys. All a short run from the marina.
